Effective Techniques for Changing Your Power Steering Cylinder

If you're uncertain whether your cylinders are similar to mine, the dimensions of my rods are 1/2". Recently, I had to replace both cylinders. Initially, I was unable to remove the inner seal using compressed air alone.

Upon advice from an experienced mechanic, I pushed the rod entirely in, then drilled a tiny hole in the seal using a 1/16 drill bit. I inserted a dry wall screw into this small hole, effectively pulling out the seal. To install the new seal, I used a 3/8” deep 9/16” socket, which worked perfectly.

If your cylinders are similar, the Edelmann #7877 from Rockauto.com is an excellent option, costing around $9. The kit includes an additional inner seal and necessary components for the job. Removing the bushing might require a pick, but it's manageable given that you're replacing it anyway.

Wondering if this job can be done without removing the cylinder? It’s possible. Detach the drag link end from the cylinder and ensure you have a method to support the cylinder while you work on it.
