US6799785B1 - Glove Box Door Damping Device

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit our website.

The present invention relates in general to a damper mechanism for vehicle glove boxes and particularly to a damper mechanism that utilizes a cam deflected spring to damp the downward movement of the glove box lid.

2. Description of the Related Art

To improve the smoothness and quality feel while opening a glove box door, various damping devices have been employed. These devices include elaborate assemblies of springs, pistons, cams, and cables to slow the descent of the glove box door as it opens. This is particularly crucial in modern glove box doors that use a sheet metal liner to meet safety standards.

For example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,886,311 to Trube et al. discloses a glove box lock mechanism mounted in the dash panel.

Similarly, U.S. Pat. No. 5,292,159 to Sandhu et al. teaches a flush-mounted door latching mechanism for glove boxes.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,385,378 to Hakamada et al. describes a glove box opening system that allows the glove box door to open further to access the interior area of the dashboard for servicing air conditioning or airbag units.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,823,583 to Sandhu et al. offers a simplified three-piece glove box latching mechanism.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,868,448 to Izumo teaches a glove box lid that opens upwards with a tensioning mechanism to keep the glove box lid open until it is manually closed.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,591,083 to Bittinger et al. discusses damping a glove box door's movement using a compressible rubber wheel.

U.S. Pat. No. 6,152,501 to Magi et al. introduces a glove box door handle and latch assembly, with a door latch mounted flush with the exterior door panel.

U.S. Patent Application Publication Number 2002/0171248 to Diss et al. details a glove box latching assembly with a handle mounted flush with the exterior door panel.

Despite these advancements, there is still a need for an efficient, easy-to-assemble, cost-effective glove box door damping device that is less prone to breakage.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION

The present invention offers advantages and alternatives over prior art by providing a glove box damping assembly that can be molded, thereby reducing manufacturing and assembly costs.

According to another aspect of the present invention, a glove box damper comprises a cam assembly with a cam lobe attached perpendicularly to a pair of mounting spindles and at least two brackets for mounting the cam assembly along the bottom edge of a glove box lid. The glove box lid is mounted along its lower edge to a glove box bin, allowing the lid to open downward. A spring assembly with an integral spring against which the cam lobe is biased further includes spindle mounting slots for positioning the cam assembly, thereby damping the downward opening movement of the glove box lid.

Another aspect of the invention involves a cam assembly comprising a cam lobe attached perpendicularly to a pair of mounting spindles and brackets for the bottom edge of a glove box lid. The spring assembly includes an integral spring against which the cam lobe is biased and stops the cam's travel at a desired point. The spindle mounting slots position the cam assembly on an instrument panel retainer, damping the downward movement and limiting the travel of the glove box lid.

This invention provides a glove box damper device that is easy to assemble, cost-effective, minimizes breakage, and offers a sense of smooth operation and quality construction to the user.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 shows an exploded sectional partial side plan view of the glove box damper device of the present invention.

FIG. 2 shows a perspective view of the cam portion of the glove box damper device.

FIG. 3 shows a perspective view of the spring portion of the glove box damper.

FIG. 4 shows a front plan view of a portion of an instrument panel retainer, containing a glove box opening with the springs and retaining slots for the damper device.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Reference will now be made to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to designate like components throughout the various views. Referring to FIG. 1, there is an exploded sectional partial plan view of a glove box assembly 100 having the damper device 10 of the present invention. The glove box assembly 100 comprises a glove box body or shell 101 and a glove box lid 102 as mounted in a vehicle.

As shown in FIG. 1, the damper device 10 includes a cam assembly 20 mounted on or molded into the glove box lid 102 and a spring portion 31 mounted on or molded into the I P retainer 30.

Referring to FIG. 2, there is a perspective view of the cam assembly 20 with a cam lobe 1, a pair of mounting spindles 2, and a pair of mounting brackets 3. The mounting spindles 2 are rotatively mounted in retaining slots 32 (FIG. 3) of instrument panel retainer 30. The cam lobe 1 is substantially perpendicular to mounting spindles 2, and the mounting brackets 3 are fixedly attached to the glove box lid 102.

Turning to FIG. 3, the instrument panel retainer 30 has a spring 31 molded therein and retaining slots 32 configured to receive corresponding mounting spindles 2 (FIG. 2) of the cam assembly 20. The spindles 2 position the cam 1 to ride against spring 31. Also shown are mounting slots 33 for easy insertion of the mounting spindles 2 into the retaining slots 32. During the downward opening movement of the glove box lid 102, the spring 31 exerts a desired force against the rotational movement of cam 1 thereby damping and slowing the lid's downward movement. The spring 31 may also stop the cam's rotational movement at a predetermined point, limiting the glove box lid's opening travel.

Referring to FIG. 4, a partial front plan view of an instrument panel retainer 30 shows molded springs 31 and paired retaining slots 32.

The combination of cam 1 rotating against spring 31 results in a resistance to the downward movement of glove box lid 102, giving a smooth operation feel and quality construction. It also eliminates the sense of weight in the glove box lid 102, enhancing the feeling of quality.

Ideally, the spring is about 30% compressed when the glove box lid is closed and about 50% compressed when open. Various compression levels can achieve the desired damping effect during the lid's travel.

The damper device 10 may be made of any suitable material known in the art. It can be the same material as the instrument panel retainer or different to achieve desired damping properties. Preferred materials include acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS), NOREL by General Electric Corporation, polypropylene, and other engineered materials. The parts of the damper device can be made of the same or different materials.

Although the preferred embodiments have been disclosed, various changes and modifications can be made without departing from the invention's scope as set forth in the claims.
