What are redispersible polymer powders? - Cellulose Ether
Redispersible polymer powders are organic binders transformed into powdered thermoplastic resin materials through processes like high temperatures, pressures, spray drying, and surface treatments. When mixed with water, these powders reconstitute into emulsions with properties identical to the original copolymer emulsions.

Adding redispersible polymer powders to mortar enhances its cohesiveness, cohesion, and flexibility. Firstly, they improve the water retention of mortar by forming a film that reduces water evaporation. Secondly, they enhance the bond strength of the mortar.
The concept of redispersible polymer powder was introduced by Wacker Hemie in Germany in 1953, enabling the production of polymer-modified dry-mix mortar. Despite being around for only over 50 years, significant advancements have been made in production techniques, resulting in a range of innovative products and applications.

REDISPERSIBLE POLYMER POWDERS
DESCRIPTION
Redispersible polymer powder
Also known as RPP, polymer powder, polymer additive, RDP
Redispersible polymer powder (RPP) can redisperse in water to form aqueous polymer dispersions that form continuous polymer films upon curing. These films enhance the water-holding capacity, adhesion, and workability of dry building mixtures.
Production method
Redispersible powder is obtained by spray drying a latex emulsion. Polyvinyl alcohol is used to prevent latex particles from clumping together during production. RPPs are typically made from polyvinyl acetate, vinyl acetate copolymers with ethylene or vinyl versatate, and acrylic polymers.
Properties
Upon mixing with water, the powder disperses and forms a film after drying, increasing adhesion and elasticity. The properties vary, with some powders offering high adhesion and low elasticity, and others the opposite. Water repellents can be added to impart hydrophobic properties.
Application areas
Redispersible polymer powders are used in manufacturing:
- Tile adhesives
- Plasters
- Putties
- Repair compositions
- Waterproofing
- Self-leveling floors, etc.
