Advice on Purchasing a Loader for Loading Sand We are embarking on a new venture with the opportunity to start a sand plant operation. My background is primarily in pipeline, utilities, and general excavation. We also launched a dirt pit about a year ago. In the dirt pit, we use an excavator to load the dirt into the trucks, currently employing our PC200LC8. As dirt sales are currently slow, I plan to move a Case 125B to the dirt pit to free up the 200 for other uses. The sand plant will primarily use an excavator for sand excavation. I might also utilize a Link Belt LS78 pipeliner dragline for some of the digging. We don't need to dredge as we can extract sand from a large area when the river is at normal or low levels, and the river will replenish the area during high water levels. For efficient operations, we need a rubber-tired loader. We have access to an area half a mile away for stockpiling sand and loading it from there. Although loading directly from the excavation site would be ideal, many trucks struggle to navigate sandy areas. Hence, we will use our trucks to transport sand to the stockpile area and load customer trucks there with a wheel loader. Considering my limited loader experience, any suggestions are appreciated. I've briefly operated a Cat IT28 and handled loading and unloading with both Ford and International machines, though they were quite old. I am interested in an IT type machine for versatility in utility jobs and pipe handling. However, given that it will mainly be used for loading sand, it might not be the best idea. What size machine should I look for, primarily for loading tandem dump trucks and sometimes end dumps? Regarding brands, I use Case backhoes, Komatsu excavators, and dozers. I generally like Cat equipment, although I don’t own much. As for Deere, I’ve had positive experiences, but I’m not fond of the local Deere dealer. I want a machine in good condition with easily available parts. I’m not looking for a new machine right now but want a good value on a reasonably modern piece of equipment. I’m aware of a 450 Hitachi hoe available at a good price for the pit and may keep the 200 there initially. Thanks for any insights on this situation.
