Boker 440C Stainless Steel: Understanding the Quality Concerns

knarfeng said:

I realized I was rushing. You're right about the tolerances. Even so, while the tolerance for the Chinese steel is ±0.2% and for 440C it's ±0.15%, the 9Cr13MoV falls on the lower end of the 440C carbon content range.

They still aren't equivalent.

My point still stands: you sometimes find Chinese-made knives labeled as 440C when they aren’t truly 440C. The performance of these steels doesn't match genuine 440C, leading users to believe 440C doesn't perform well when, in fact, real 440C is much better.

Returning to my original point, if the Bokers in question are produced in mainland China, there's a concern regarding whether the steel is genuinely 440C or a Chinese variant with lower properties.

Issues with Chinese Manufacturing

Hi, I’d like to share my thoughts. A major issue with products from China, regardless of the manufacturer, including Boker, is that US and European manufacturers believe they are getting great deals due to low labor costs. However, these knives are sold at higher prices domestically despite being produced cheaply. Chinese manufacturers are not naive; they often cut corners, especially in quality control, to save costs and maintain profits.

Laser engravers and skilled programmers in China can place any label onto a blade. I've encountered Boker counterfeits that are impressively made, and the steel, whatever it truly is (I haven't yet done a quantitative XRF analysis), takes and holds an edge well. The constructions of these knives are great, but they are fakes. Once any product reaches the Chinese market, product confidentiality disappears as understood by the rest of the world.

The Prevalence of Knife Fakes

Consider the numerous fake FOX Knives, especially the Blackfox line, which is manufactured in China. FOX decided to produce some knives there, and soon Chinese factories began producing inferior copies, some not even using N690 steel. Has anyone questioned the origin of these fakes?

Schrade also manufactures many knives in China, and they suffer from poor quality control as well, often being blunt straight out of the box but sold at low prices.

German vs. Chinese Made Knives

I have a friend resolving issues between German and Chinese coworkers on these topics. It's true that Chinese manufacturers often don’t follow global standards for steel alloy compositions and names.

If you lack confidence in the steel quality of Chinese-made Bokers, it's advisable to buy German-made Bokers. The association of "Made in China" with low quality, especially for knives, remains unless proven otherwise. This does not mean there are no quality products from China; good products do exist.

If you are skeptical about the authenticity of Chinese-made Bokers labeled as 440C, you'll likely distrust any Chinese-made knife from a foreign brand. Many Boker Plus knives are poorly made with subpar quality control, reflecting the notion that you get what you pay for. I hope this insight into steel alloys and designations contributes to the discussion.
