A lot of the time you won’t have much say on the size of your garage door, but if you’re looking to install a bespoke door for your garage it’s a good idea to know how much space you have available.

Here at Rollerdor, we regularly supply domestic and commercial properties with quality roller garage doors in a whole host of sizes.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most common roller garage door sizes in the industry.

Single roller garage doors

Single garage doors are great for properties that only have one small vehicle, or you don’t need a huge amount of storage space. Typically, single roller garage doors have a width of 6ft 6in and a height of 7ft.

Double roller garage doors are ideal if you have more than one vehicle or particularly large ones like 4X4s. Usually, these types of garage doors come with a width between 10ft 6in to 16ft, and a height of 6ft 6in to 7ft.

How to measure your garage door

If you’re looking to install a new garage door at your property, it’s important to understand how much space you have to play with. This will then help inform what size of garage door is most appropriate for you, as well as ensure any new styles of door will fit in the space.

When taking your garage’s measurements, you need to check the specifications of the:

  • Width of the opening: Measured from the inside edge of your opening, not the door frame.
  • Height of the opening: Measured from the floor to the bottom edge of the top frame.
  • Left and right side space: Make sure you have enough clearance on both sides for the tracks.
  • Headroom: The space from the top of the garage opening to the ceiling or any obstruction.

Accurate measurement is key to ensure a perfect fit and smooth operation of your garage door.

Consultation with Industry Experts

We reached out to several experts in the field to give their insights on common roller garage door sizes.

John Smith, a garage door specialist with over 20 years of experience, states, "The 7ft height is quite standard, but it's always important to double-check the height within your own garage. Variations in ceiling height or other structural features may require custom sizing."

Mary Brown, an architect with professional experience in designing residential properties, adds, "When choosing a garage door, consider the storage needs and future plans. For example, families may think ahead about securing space for two vehicles even if they presently own just one."

James Williams, a representative from Rollerdor Ltd, confirms that "our clients often need guidance in understanding how different sizes can fit into their existing space without causing any issues in daily operations. That's why we always recommend professional consultation and precise measurement before installation."
