Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) Pipe: Benefits and Defects
Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) Pipe: Benefits and Defects
Glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is a composite material made of glass fiber and its products (glass cloth, tape, felt, yarn, etc.) reinforced with synthetic resin as the matrix material. According to the different fibers can be divided into glass fiber reinforced composite plastic (GFRP), carbon fiber reinforced composite plastic (CFRP), boron fiber reinforced composite plastic. FRP pipe is made by fixed length winding, centrifugal casting and continuous winding process. frp pipes and water tanks have been widely used in petroleum, electric power, chemical industry, paper making, urban water supply and drainage and other industries.Get a free quotation.
The advantages of FRP pipe
1 Good corrosion resistance.
As the main raw material of FRP is unsaturated polyester resin and glass fiber, it can effectively resist the corrosion of acid, alkali, salt and other media and the erosion of untreated sewage, corrosive soil, chemical wastewater and many kinds of chemical liquids, and has become the main raw material of chlor-alkali industry.
2 Good heat resistance.
Glass fiber pipe can be used for a long time in the temperature range from -40 to 70, and the reinforced resin can even reach more than 200. UV absorbers are added to the outer surface of the open-air pipe to eliminate UV radiation to the pipe and delay the aging of the FRP pipe. The excellent corrosion resistance of FRP means that the material is lively and non-polluting, making it a natural material for storing highly pure water, pharmaceuticals, wine, milk and other highly clean items.
3 Good anti-freezing properties.
No freezing and cracking will occur when the tube is frozen below -20°C.
4 Light weight and convenient transportation.
FRP pipe is not only light weight, high strength, malleable, easy to transport and install, but also easy to install various branch pipes. A FRP tower will be founded easily.
5 Pipe flow resistance is small.
Smooth inner wall, strong conveying capacity, low water resistance, no scaling, no rusting.
6. Good design capability.
FRP pipe can be designed and manufactured into different pressure levels and stiffness levels according to the specific requirements of users, such as flow, pressure, burial depth, load conditions, etc.
7. Low maintenance cost.
Since FRP pipe has excellent corrosion resistance, wear resistance, frost resistance and pollution resistance, there is no need for rust prevention, pollution prevention, insulation, insulation and other measures and maintenance. Buried pipes do not need cathodic protection, which can save more than 70% of maintenance costs.
8 Good wear resistance.
Will contain a lot of sediment water into the FPR pipe rotary wear, the effect of comparison found frp than enamel coating and tar coating steel pipe wear is smaller.
9 High transmission capacity.
The smooth glass inner wall of the steel pipe provides very little roughness and frictional resistance. Glass pipes can significantly reduce fluid pressure loss and increase conveying capacity: optional small diameter FRP pipes are available to reduce one-time investment costs and pumping costs. In addition, FRP pipes can shorten the pumping time.

Disadvantages of FRP pipe
1,Low modulus of elasticity.
The modulus of elasticity of FRP is 2 times larger than wood and 10 times smaller than steel (E=2.1×106). Therefore, it is not rigid enough and easily deformed in structural applications. It can be made into thin shell structure, insulation sandwich structure, or made of high modulus fiber or steel.
2,Poor long-term temperature resistance.
FRP can not be used at high temperatures for a long time, polyester FRP strength decreases significantly above 50 , generally only used below 100 . Epoxy FRP strength decreases significantly above 60. High temperature resistant resin makes long-term working temperature of 200-300 possible.
3,Easy aging.
Aging phenomenon is a common defect of plastics and FRP. Its performance will be reduced by ultraviolet light, wind yarn rain and snow, chemical media, mechanical stress and other factors.

Fiber Reinforced Plastic | Types, Advantages, Disadvantages, Applications
What is fiber reinforced plastic?
Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is a type of plastic in which the strength of low strength plastic material is increased by means of high strength of fibers.
Fiber reinforced plastics contains to main things one is matrix and another is fiber. The function of matrix is to support and hold the fibers in the correct position. Matrix also prevents fibers from surface damage and environmental conditions.
The matrix material should show stability with moisture and temperature. The FRP fibers are the main component which bears the actual load.
The bond between the fibers and the matrix is generally made with the help of a chemical adhesive. The length of fibers should be more so that the strength of bond between matrix and fibers is more than the tensile strength on fibers.
Advantages of fiber reinforced plastic
It is lightweight
It has high strength
It has high modulus of elasticity
It has high resistance to fatigue failure
It has good resistance to corrosion
Disadvantages of fiber reinforced plastic
Strength of FRP in a direction perpendicular to the fibers is extremely low (up to 5%) compared with the strength along the length of fibers
The design of components made from FRP is complex
The manufacturing and testing of FRP components is highly specialized

Advantages
Fabrication and Designing Process:
The material allows for considerable flexibility is term of design. FRP can be field fabricated using simple carpenters tools with carbon and diamond tip blades. No torches or welding are required. The light weight of the material allows for easier transport and installation. In contrast steel often requires special equipment to erect and installed.
Resilence
Fiberglass products have a hard finish. the gelcoat which covers and colours finished fiberglass products can be tailored to provide greater hardness or more resilence.
Cost
While stainless steel has a lower initial material cost than fiber reinforced plastic, FRP has lower installation and maintenance allowing for lower life cycle cost overall. Wood is cheaper but also much more susceptible to degradation, causing high maintenance cost. Aluminum is comparable in price to fiberglass polymer.
Stiffness
FRP is upto 3.3times as rigid as timber and will not permanently deform under working load. The modulus of elasticity is 2.8*106 psi.
Impact of Resistance
FRP will not permenantly deform or break under impact like traditional building materials. The glass mat in pultruded parts distributes impact load to prevent surface damage, even in subzero temperatures.
Corrosion, Rot and Insects Resistance
FRP resists a broad range of chemicals and is unaffected by moister or immersion in water, making it ideal as protective covering for surfaces where chemical spillages might occur. it also resists insect damage. Steel and aluminium are subject to oxidation and corrosions. They require painting or galvanizing for many applications. Even concrete is subject to water damage. Wood can wrap, rot and decay when exposed to moister, water and chemicals. Wood is also very susceptible to attacks from insects like turmites and marine borers.
Strength
FRP has greater flexural strength than timber and pound [-for-pound is often stronger than steel and aluminium in the lengthwise direction. Ultimate flexural strength is LW- psi and CW-psi.
Weight
FRP is only 2/3 the weight of aluminums and ¼ the weight of steel. This makes the material much easier to lift for installation or repairs. Leading to lower maintenance and installation costs.
Color
Scince fiber reinforced polymer components are molded, color can be molded straight through the part. For more traditional materials, combination of paints, stains and coatings must be used and will require periodic reapplication. Wide range of colors are available.
Electrical Conductivity
FRP is nonconductive and has a high dielectric capability while metals like steel and aluminium conduct electricity and most be grounded. Even tiler can be conductive when wet.
Thermal Conductivity
FRP is good insulator with low thermal conductivity. Unlike metals like steel and aluminium which conduct heat, FRP maintains a constant temperature and are always cool to touch. FRP resistance to heat and corrosion makes it successful even in humid, swampy conditions.
