How to Save Money When Buying inflatable air mattress
Best Air Mattress Buying Guide
When we evaluate air mattresses, our primary focus is on deflection, which refers to how much the mattress sags over time. A sagging mattress can lead to air escape while you sleep, potentially leaving you with a sore back come morning. Conversely, a mattress that maintains its shape means that weight is evenly distributed, allowing it to retain consistent firmness. This is vital for providing adequate support and facilitates getting in and out of the mattress smoothly. Our testing procedure involves placing weights totaling over 250 pounds on a mattress, then assessing how much the surface depresses by taking multiple readings over an hour.

Moreover, we also evaluate air mattresses for their convenience. Does the mattress take an excessive amount of time to inflate? (For context, one model in our tests took a staggering 6 minutes to fully inflate.) Our team also checks whether the mattress is cumbersome to store. They note if a model includes a storage bag or box and examine its overall size and weight when rolled up to determine its convenience for storage.
Finding The Best Air Mattress!
This season, many of us are welcoming family and friends into our homes, and the good news is that creating a comfy guest space doesn’t need to be overly complicated! Pumping up air mattresses can provide a quick and effective solution for temporary sleeping arrangements. However, we all know that some air mattress experiences can be less than stellar, so I’m here to share my findings after some practical testing to discover the best air mattresses available for hosting your loved ones!
Recently, my four closest friends flew in from across the country for my birthday celebration, and I decided to create a fun “blow-up” sleepover area for us to enjoy. I purchased five twin-size, double-height, internally-pumped mattresses, which are my criteria for comfort and usability. Ensuring a pleasant sleep experience for myself and my guests was my main priority!
Below are the contenders we tested:
SoundAsleep Air Mattress (XL Twin) $129
This model boasts the highest number of 5-star reviews on Amazon, with over 50,000 reviews. Although advertised as an XL twin, it’s only slightly longer than standard twin mattresses—merely an inch! Its construction is visually appealing, featuring a soft blue top and subtle pink sides. The top is made of a gentle, water-resistant material, while the sides use sturdy, puncture-resistant PVC.
It does take longer to inflate compared to other models, needing about 2 minutes for full inflation, which is manageable. The comfort level, however, was slightly less than the other mattresses, though it still provided a decent night’s sleep!
Englander Air Mattress (Twin) $99
This mattress stands out for its aesthetic appeal, featuring attractive waterproof material in a lovely tan color. The horizontal grooves on the top provide substantial comfort, particularly for the lower back.
Inflation for this mattress took a little over a minute, placing it on par for ease. Comfort-wise, it rivals the King Koil option.
King Koil Air Mattress (Twin) $119
Similar to the SoundAsleep mattress, the King Koil also has a soft, microfiber, waterproof cover. The elevated edge and added bump on the pillow area made it particularly luxurious, providing excellent support even without an extra pillow.
In terms of overall comfort and appearance, it was a hit. Our sleepover room was ready for guests within a couple of days, and we found that a little top-off of air before bedtime ensured the mattresses stayed full throughout the night. Even my pregnant friend remarked on the comfortable sleep she enjoyed!

All the mattresses measured 20 inches in depth except for the SoundAsleep mattress at 18 inches. We fit them perfectly with standard twin sheets, and they held snugly throughout the night, complemented by queen-sized comforters that provided ample coverage.
The Best Air Mattress
Overall, the King Koil emerged as the best air mattress, with its superior aesthetics, comfort, and durability. It is undoubtedly the model I would choose if I require additional air mattresses in the future!
The Englander mattress follows closely behind, priced a bit lower while still offering excellent quality for those looking to save some money.
While the SoundAsleep mattress is good, I believe you can find better options with the other two at a more competitive price point.
