Waterproof Rugged Computers
Waterproof computers are used for a variety of applications in marine and maritime environments, both on surface and subsurface platforms.
They may take the form of a rugged embedded computer, used for specialized applications such as vessel autopilots and robotic vehicle control, or data collection and processing. Waterproof PCs may also be desktop or wall-mountable units that can be used for display of information such as weather and navigation charts, or for general-purpose computing.
Protection & IP Ratings
Waterproof computers need to be sealed to provide a certain level of protection, and are typically rated according to the IP (ingress protection) set of standards. The second digit in the two-digit code specifies that the device is able to withstand certain levels of water spray or immersion, as defined by the standard. Common waterproof computer ratings include:
- IP66
- IP67
- IP68
- IP69
Sealing
Sealing of these computers is achieved through a variety of design techniques, including the use of rubber or silicone gaskets and o-rings around potential entrance points such as connectors, buttons and the edges of the screen. Cable glands may also be used to secure peripheral connection points.

Rugged & Fanless Computer Technology
Fanless computers that rely on heatsinks and conductive cooling are common in marine and maritime environments, as the airflow pathway required by fan-assisted cooling represents an additional entry point that is difficult to waterproof.
Other waterproofing techniques include the use of conformal coatings to protect internal electronic PCBs from moisture.
Waterproof computers may also be ruggedized against other environmental factors. They are typically manufactured from stainless steel or aluminium in order to resist corrosion by water and salt. They are also typically built to withstand high levels of shock and vibration, which are common in marine vessel environments and may also be designed with extended temperature ranges.
Waterproof Computers | IP65, IP66, IP67, IP69K, NEMA 4X ...
Teguars waterproof computers are built for tough environments where waterjets or strong chemicals are used for cleaning. They're fully dustproof and waterproof, ideal for food and beverage manufacturing, meat/poultry processing, pharmaceutical processing, clean room manufacturing and outdoor placements. These Waterproof PCs are built with SUS304 or SUS316L stainless steel, and have fanless heatsink cooling systems. They are NEMA 4X rated and range in Ingress Protection (IP) ratings from IP65 to IP69K.
