air cooled deutz engines have a side-mounted belt driven cooling fan instead of a fined fly-wheel type like on listers,
why is that?
Don't know for sure. But a couple possibilities come to mind:
1 - The side-mounted fan feeds into a tapered air distribution duct that directs air to the cylinders. This evenly distributes cooling air across all the cylinders. Otherwise the rear cylinders would run hotter than the front.
2 - A step-up belt drive spins the fan faster than the crankshaft which permits the use of a smaller diameter fan. Thus the entire engine package can be more compact than if a flywheel fan is used.
if the belt breaks what happens to the engine?The only Deutz I ever fooled with had a linkage connecting the belt tensioning idler arm to the injection pump fuel shutoff. If the belt broke the tensioner arm would go to full stroke, shutting off the fuel and stopping the engine. next to listers a deutz is another working favoret engine of mines, never had one break down much less work on one, hard to start in the winter but a very good engine,
there is a deutz f1l511 on craigslist western mass. right now for $600 that im looking at, i know next to nothing about the f1 series and was conserned about parts avalibility, servises, longivity for these engines and any info. from anyone who has used or has a deutz f series,

I've owned many Deutz engines over the years, including an F5L912 in a Chevy Blazer. The 511 is basically a small version of the 912. They are very difficult to start unless you activate the fuel allowance button on the injection pump, then they will start in virtually any weather. The later series are air and oil cooled and not built to the same quality as the 912 series. They also use a timing belt, no keyways or timing marks, and requirs special tools to set the timing. When running properly, they are not a bad runner.I would think parts availability is a non issue, just make sure your finances are in good shape. If I am not mistaken, the fan on the 511 does not run all of the time. There is a hydraulic clutch on the fan which engages when the temperature rises.
An F1L511 will cost around $450 in parts for you to fully rebuild it. Last I checked, a rebuilt F1L511 cost $ with a good core exchange
When looking for a Deutz air cooled of any size, it is very important to check that all of the air shrouds, and belts are in place and taught. I would not buy any Deutz if any shroud were missing, or if a belt were loose. These engines rely solely on air for cooling. Without either, the engine you purchase will need to be completely rebuilt.
That being said, a properly maintained 511 series will run you 15,000hrs before any major work is needed.
If weight is a concern, the F1L511 weighs about 300lbs
Chris A friend of mine has had Deutz Fahr combines for the past thirty years or so, all except the latest one have had air-cooled engines. In dusty conditions it's important to keep the cooling air shroud and cylinder fins clean, also the earlier ones didn't shut off the fuel when the fan-belt broke, instead the tensioner arm tripped a switch which set off an alarm buzzer in the cab...this switch is also susceptible to dust which he discovered one harvest when the engine seized shortly before the warning buzzer sounded- a call to the dealers calmed him- they told him to let it cool down, fit the new belt and go back to work!..he finished that harvest and a few more without any problems...tough engines!! another q. if you don't mind,
i now have several other people swearing by deutz engines, they are tough engines for shure, i operated a bell feller buncher in a mill yard that was without the cutter head, had the long arm just for loading, my job was to re-deck logs according to length, and help load on to the track for the de-barker on days with large orders, you can really haul balls and spin on a dime and get a 2 cent change back with that thing, it had a deutz f4l912, i think i spent more time on 2 wheels then 3, my yard forman yelled at me for driving slow, i whent nuts, slinging logs, dragging 3 at a time with the logs bounching off of the wheel, i had a early lunch that day , it will take it and come back tommorow want'n more,
anyways, i was thinking of buying this engine and flipping it for a few bucks, or saving it, and belting it up to a gen-head, before i do anything i wanted to check with you guys about a bolt up gen-head and can a bolt-up be done with this particular model deutz without any modification to the p.t.o. shaft? im thinking of looking at it this weekand for condition and runabillity,
