Steel coil: Definition and classification, Benefits, Uses & more

Steel coils, also referred to as coiled steel, are essential in manufacturing, engineering, and the construction industry. According to Google’s search result snippets, steel coils are versatile and used broadly due to their tensile strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. In this article, we take a deeper dive into the different types and classifications of steel coils available in India, their properties, and considerations for purchasing steel online or offline.

Steel is vital for many industries because of its high tensile strength, flexibility, and affordability. It is most commonly used in the form of steel coil, which is made from steel slabs. There are various classifications of steel coils used across industries for different functions. Steel coils are produced through hot rolling, cold rolling, or the Electrolytic Tinplate (ETP) method.

The quality of steel coils largely depends on the grade of steel used. Different grades of steel offer different mechanical properties and compositions. Globally, there are about 3,500 steel grades with a wide range of properties. Steel coils are selected based on a company’s specific requirements. For instance, car manufacturers use Advanced High-strength Steels (AHSS), while the construction industry typically opts for Fe 415 and Fe 500 grades.

A coil refers to a length of metal, wire, or rope arranged in circles one above the other. This process is known as coiling. Metals, including aluminium coils, are often flattened into sheets and wound into coils for industrial use.

Let’s examine steel coils' meaning, classifications, and industrial applications in greater detail.

Definition and Benefits of Steel Coil

Steel coils are sheets or strips of steel wound after rolling. They are manufactured by placing a slab in a continuous rolling machine to reduce its thickness until it forms a sheet, which is then wound into coils.

Steel coils offer several benefits:
• Durability
• Excellent heat resistance
• Low maintenance
• Safe to use
• Affordable

Uses of Steel Coil

Steel coils can be formed into any shape and are combined with various materials to create specific products. Coiled steel is used in building components, machinery, electrical equipment, and kitchen appliances.

Manufacture of Automotive Parts

Steel is essential in manufacturing automotive parts like the vehicle shell, chassis, suspension, rims, and exhaust system. Its durability, heat resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and non-combustibility make it ideal for automotive use.

Electronic Components

Steel coils are used in computers, smartphones, circuit boards, etc. Steel's high melting point makes it suitable for electronic goods, and it also contributes to their cost-effectiveness.

Pipe Manufacturing

Steel rolling machines enable the continuous rolling of pipes without welding, aiding in constructing long pipelines and household applications such as heating and plumbing.

Railroads

Carbon steel coils are used in railroads due to their high flexibility and capability to expand without changing shape, making them suitable for train wheels and tracks.

Today, businesses can purchase steel coils online, enabling them to compare prices, delivery timelines, quality, and other details before buying. Tata nexarc’s Procurement offers such a platform for competitive and hassle-free steel purchases.

Steel Coil Classification

Steel coils are classified into two main categories based on their processing method:

Hot Rolled Steel Coils

Produced in hot-rolling mills, hot rolled coils are manufactured by heating steel above its recrystallization temperature and then rolling it out. This method results in a finished product that shrinks when cooled, leading to less control over its final shape. Hot rolled steel is commonly used for railway tracks and construction projects.

Characteristics of hot rolled steel include:

  • A scaled surface from cooling
  • Slightly rounded edges and corners due to shrinkage

Rolling refers to a metal forming process where metal stock is passed between two rolls to flatten and achieve uniform thickness.

Cold Rolled Steel Coils

Cold rolled steel coil is produced from hot rolled steel that has been re-rolled at room temperature to achieve exact dimensions and better surface qualities. Other cold finishing processes like turning, grinding, and polishing further refine the product.

Characteristics of cold rolled steel include:

  • Smooth finished surfaces
  • Well-defined edges and corners
  • Better uniformity

Other types of steel coils include galvanized steel coil, carbon steel coil, and stainless-steel coil, each offering different mechanical and physical properties. For instance, commercial quality galvanized steel might have a thickness range of 0.14-0.80 mm, whereas carbon coil steel might vary from 0.0508 to 0.889 mm.

Understanding the various classifications and applications of steel coils can help select the ideal product for your manufacturing needs.
